TL;DR: Agile Space Industries, a Colorado in-space propulsion company, opened an engineering office in Bellevue, Washington, to tap the Seattle region's aerospace talent, starting with about seven people and room for around 30. The lesson for space founders: hiring is marketing. Engineers choose employers the way buyers choose suppliers, based on mission, proof and people. Build an employer brand with a clear mission story, visible technical leaders, specific job pages and honest content about the work, then promote it where engineers already pay attention.
Key takeaways
On October 15, 2026, Agile Space Industries announced a new office in Bellevue, Washington. The office will initially accommodate seven employees, with capacity to grow to about 30, and will focus on engineering and program management for propulsion systems used in government and commercial missions. Chief Technology Officer Jake Mills is based there. "Seattle has a remarkable concentration of aerospace talent, innovative companies and organizations advancing the space industry," Mills said.
GeekWire reported that Mills is a former Blue Origin propulsion engineer who joined Durango, Colorado-based Agile in June, and that Agile employs 178 people across its headquarters, an additive manufacturing center in Pennsylvania and a test center under construction in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The press release itself does some employer branding: it says the expansion "creates opportunities for experienced aerospace professionals looking to work on complex propulsion challenges in a collaborative, hands-on engineering environment."
Space startups compete for the same engineers as large primes, well-funded launch companies and big tech. You usually can't win on salary or brand recognition alone. You win by telling a more compelling, more specific story to the right people, which is exactly what marketing does.
Engineers evaluate employers like buyers evaluate suppliers:
| Buyer question | Engineer's version |
|---|---|
| Will this company deliver? | Will this company survive and ship hardware? |
| Is the technology credible? | Will I work on real, challenging problems? |
| Who will I work with? | Who will I learn from? |
| Is this worth the switching cost? | Is this worth leaving my current job? |
If your marketing answers buyer questions, your employer brand should answer engineer questions with the same care.
Rather than asking engineers to move to Durango, Agile opened an office in a region with deep aerospace talent. Not every startup can open a new office, but every startup can choose where to show up: regional events, university programs, online communities and the conferences engineers attend.
Agile put its CTO, a former propulsion engineer, at the center of the expansion. Engineers want to know who they'll learn from. A visible technical leader who posts, speaks and writes about the work is one of the strongest employer branding assets a startup has.
The release mentions programs that span "early development through qualified flight hardware." That's the kind of detail engineers look for. "Fast-paced environment" means nothing. "You'll take a thruster from design review to hot-fire test" means a lot.
The same news speaks to customers (more engineering capacity), partners and investors (growth) and candidates (new roles). Write a short version for each.
You don't need a big budget. You need consistency.

Track a few simple signals:
If referrals and inbound applicants rise while time to fill falls, your employer brand is doing its job.
On October 15, 2026, Agile Space Industries announced a new engineering and program management office in Bellevue, Washington, starting with about seven employees and room to grow to around 30, with its CTO based there.
Employer branding is how a company presents itself to potential employees: its mission, culture, work and people. For startups, it's how you compete for talent against larger, better-known employers.
Lead with the mission and the specific technical work, make technical leaders visible, share proof of progress, ask for referrals and show up where engineers gather, including events and university programs.
It depends on budget and work style. Agile chose to open an office where aerospace talent already lives. Smaller startups can get similar benefits by recruiting regionally and showing up at local events and programs.
Track qualified applicants per role, source of hire, offer acceptance rate, time to fill and candidate feedback.
