SAM.gov Registration for Space Startups: Step by Step

November 07, 2026

TL;DR: SAM.gov registration lets a space startup bid on federal contracts and apply for awards such as SBIR as a prime. It is free. Create a Login.gov account, get your Unique Entity ID, then complete core data, assertions, representations and certifications, and points of contact. Gather your documents first, start early and renew every 365 days.

Key takeaways

  • Registration on SAM.gov is free; you never need to pay a third party.
  • A full registration lets you bid as a prime; a Unique Entity ID alone covers only some sub-awardee needs.
  • Use the official checklist to gather details before you start.
  • Start early, keep details consistent with IRS records and renew every 365 days.

What is SAM.gov and why does a space startup need it?

SAM.gov, the System for Award Management, is the U.S. government's official site for registering to do business with federal agencies. According to SAM.gov, a registration lets you bid on government contracts and apply for federal assistance, and assigns your Unique Entity ID along the way.

For space startups, SAM.gov is the first gate for almost every federal path: NASA contracts, Space Force work and SBIR awards. SpaceWERX, for example, states that you must be registered in SAM before a contract can be awarded. If you plan to sell to NASA or the Space Force, start here, and see our guide to government contracts for space companies for the wider picture. Our guides on how to sell to NASA and how to sell to the Space Force cover what comes next.

Do you need a full registration or just a Unique Entity ID?

SAM.gov offers two options:

Option What it lets you do What you provide
Full registration (All Awards) Bid on contracts and apply for federal assistance as a prime Full entity details: core data, assertions, reps and certs, points of contact
Unique Entity ID only Some transactions, such as reporting as a sub-awardee Legal business name and physical address

SAM.gov is clear that if you only get a Unique Entity ID, you cannot apply directly for federal awards. If you plan to win SBIR awards or prime contracts, you need the full registration. If you only work as a subcontractor to a prime, the ID alone may be enough; check with the prime.

What do you need before you start?

SAM.gov publishes an entity registration checklist. For an All Awards registration, have these ready:

  • Legal business name and physical address. A post office box cannot be your physical address.
  • Date and state of incorporation.
  • Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and the exact taxpayer name and address on file with the IRS.
  • Organization start date and fiscal year end date.
  • Banking details for electronic funds transfer: account type, routing number and account number.
  • Ownership details, including whether another entity owns or controls yours.
  • NAICS codes that describe what you sell. Look them up at the U.S. Census Bureau's NAICS page.
  • Size information: annual receipts and number of employees.
  • Points of contact for your registration.

The GSA registration guide adds a key tip: make sure your business name, address and ownership details match across IRS, SAM.gov and SBA records.

How do you register in SAM.gov, step by step?

These steps follow the official SAM.gov guidance and checklist.

  1. Create your account. SAM.gov sign-in is managed by Login.gov. Select Sign In on SAM.gov, create or use your Login.gov account and return to SAM.gov to complete your profile.
  2. Start the registration. Choose Get Started, then Register Entity. Select the purpose (All Awards for contracts) and your entity type.
  3. Get your Unique Entity ID. Enter your legal business name, physical address and incorporation details. SAM.gov validates your entity; if it cannot, you can open a help ticket with the Federal Service Desk. You also choose whether your record is publicly visible.
  4. Complete core data. Business information, mailing address, TIN and IRS consent, CAGE code, ownership, general information and financial details. If you do not have a CAGE code, select "No" and one is assigned after you submit.
  5. Complete assertions. NAICS codes, optional Product Service Codes and your size metrics.
  6. Answer representations and certifications. Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) questions and, where applicable, the defense supplement (DFARS) questions.
  7. Add points of contact.
  8. Complete the SBA supplemental page if you are a small business.
  9. Review and submit. Then watch your email for status updates.

How long does SAM.gov registration take?

GSA advises starting early because registration can take several days to complete and validate. Validation problems, such as a name or address mismatch with IRS records, can take longer. Do not wait until a proposal deadline; register as soon as federal sales are part of your plan.

How do you keep your registration active?

  • Renew every 365 days. SAM.gov states you must renew your registration every 365 days to keep it active. SpaceWERX notes you will receive email notices before your record expires.
  • Update changes promptly, such as a new address, bank account or ownership.
  • Keep it active through the contract. GSA notes you must maintain your registration, Unique Entity ID and CAGE code throughout the life of a contract through final payment, where required.

What mistakes do space startups make with SAM.gov?

  • Paying a third party. SAM.gov is free, and GSA says you do not need to pay anyone to register. Be wary of emails offering paid registration help that look official.
  • Mismatched details. Your legal name and address must match IRS records.
  • Using a PO box as your physical address.
  • Choosing too few NAICS codes, which can hide you from agency searches. Pick every code that accurately describes what you sell.
  • Registering late, right before an SBIR or contract deadline.
  • Letting it lapse. An expired registration can block an award.

What comes after SAM.gov registration?

Registration is a starting line, not a sales channel. Next steps for a space startup:

The space marketing guide covers how to make your company easy to find and trust once government buyers start looking.

Frequently asked questions

Is SAM.gov registration free?

Yes. SAM.gov states there is no charge to get a Unique Entity ID, register your entity or maintain your registration. You do not need to pay a third party.

How long does SAM.gov registration take?

GSA says registration can take several days to complete and validate. Mismatches with IRS records can add time, so start well before any deadline.

What is a Unique Entity ID?

The Unique Entity ID is a 12-character alphanumeric identifier assigned by SAM.gov. It replaced the DUNS number as the government-wide identifier for entities doing business with the federal government.

Do I need SAM.gov registration for SBIR?

Yes, for an award. SpaceWERX states you must be registered in SAM before a contract can be awarded, and defense SBIR proposals are submitted through the DSIP portal, which has its own registration.

How often do you need to renew SAM.gov registration?

Every 365 days. SAM.gov sends reminders, but put the date in your own calendar and update details whenever they change.
